Colossians 4:7-17 - Greetings
Like several other New Testament letters, Colossians ends with a series of greetings to and from certain individuals. In Colossians 4:7-17 ten (10) people are mentioned by name. This is the type of material that we are tempted to skim over rather quickly in our personal Bible study, thinking there’s not much for us to learn from a list of names. But a closer look at this part of God’s word reveals many important truths. For example:
- Tychicus provides for us a profile in real friendship.
- Onesimus and Mark teach us about rising above our past mistakes.
- Aristarchus and Demas give us a study in contrast. Aristarchus stayed with Paul through all sorts of trouble and Demas ended up deserting Paul.
- Epaphras shows us the importance of having a worthy goal and relentlessly moving toward it.
- Luke will remind us of the importance of using our abilities for the Lord.
- Justus demonstrates to us the virtue of being willing to work in the background, not seeking to draw attention to ourselves.
- Nympha reminds us that God does not place limits on whom He can use in ministry.
- Archippus shows us God sends encouragement our way at just the right time.
In future blogs we will explore in depth the lessons we can learn from these ten (10) people.
